Chris Alford and Anthony Butt are each confident they have early speed with Lennytheshark and Smolda respectively to make the front running.
Smolda has drawn three and Lennytheshark four – a factor which Butt believes gives last year’s winner an advantage.
Driving Smolda for NZ trainer Mark Purdon, Butt said in a radio interview that the draw would help.
“He’s pretty quick off the gate. It’ll be up to the other two (Lennytheshark and favourite Lazarus) to beat him. He’ll give them something to chase.”
Alford has no doubt Lennytheshark will have to much gate speed for Smolda.
“I’m sure he’ll cross him.” He said Smolda had never been renowned for getting off the gate.“
Alford said Lennytheshark had crossed Smolda from barrier seven in last year’s Victoria Cup.
