The first stage of the building’s opening will enable visitors to access all areas of the hospital via the Drummond Street entrance – which will serve as the new main entrance – as well as via the car park.
The new building includes a main information desk located in the atrium and a new volunteers desk, where Welcome Team members will be available to assist visitors and patients in navigating the complex.
BHS corporate services director Russell Hardy said the building would provide patients and visitors with access to all areas of the hospital from one central location.
“New lifts will help take people to the first and second floors, while links to existing buildings have been made as simple as possible,” he said.
“The new Gardiner-Pittard building includes easy access for people of all abilities including drop off and pick up zones at the front door and via the Mair Street car park.”
Mr Hardy previously told The Courier the aim was to make the new reception feel warm and friendly, without feeling like a traditional hospital.
There is a garden with access from the foyer, a number of windows to let in natural light and a coffee bar with future plans to open a cafe area.
The 32 bed surgical ward within the new building is set to open towards the end of February.
The opening follows more than two years of construction works.
