Sexual Crime Squad detectives have made a public plea for for witnesses to come forward and have released a digital image of a man.
Investigators say the assault occurred between 3pm and 7pm on January 26.
Police believe a 21-year-old woman was walking outer edge of the south camp section at the festival when she struck up a conversation with an unknown man.
After a short conversation, the woman told the man she was going for a walk to the main festival area when he grabbed her by the hair and throat.
The man then pushed her up against a van and sexually assaulted her. The woman escaped but was followed by the man who grabbed her again and assaulted her two more times.
The victim pushed the man away before he bit her twice on the upper arm. The man climbed into a nearby hammock and the woman returned to her campsite.
The offender is described as 28 to 29-years-old with sandy brown hair, blue eyes a pointy nose, 165cm to 170cm tall and was wearing a grey t-shirt.
Detectives have released a digital image of a man that may be able to assist with their enquiries.
Investigators are keen to speak to anyone that may have witnessed the incident or any festival goers in that particular area at the time.
Police remain seriously concerned by the behaviour of festival goers with Superintendent Andrew Allen telling The Courier he would be “categorically agitating for a reduction in the length of the festival with the organisers” in the wake of disturbing statistics.
“The harm to the wider community is at such an alarming and tragic cost,” Superintendent Allen said.
“Something has to change.”
Anyone who has information about the incident or the man’s identity is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
