Ballarat Criminal Investigation units are investigating an Ida Street stabbing that left a 24-year-old man in a serious condition at the Ballarat Base Hospital.
Detective Sergeant Steve Howard said two males and two females knocked on the door of the Ida Street house at about 10.30pm on Tuesday night.
The 24-year-old male victim and a 24-year-old female victim, who live at the address, knew the visitors and invited them inside.
Shortly after an altercation ensued and the 24-year-old man was assaulted.
The female victim ran from the house in fear.
“The male victim fought back,” Detective Howard said.
“He followed the four offenders on foot to the end of the driveway.”
The offenders ran off into the night through a vacant block onto Sherrard Street.
At this point the male victim realised he had been stabbed on the back and face with a small knife.
The other victim and a group neighbours ran into the house and helped the man.
He was treated for stabs wounds to his back and slashes to his face and was taken to Ballarat Base Hospital where he remains.
The female victim was not injured. No motive has been established though police are investigating if the stabbing is debt related.
Police have arrested one male who has not yet been charged.
They are appealing for anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or call the CIU on 5336 6000.
