VicRoads has approved a 12-month trial that will attempt to create an equal number of female and male walking signals.
Neil Mitchell described the trial as "nonsense."
"If you want to fight sexism, there are a million places to start before this," the 3AW Mornings host said.
"They are bloody road signs."
Legislation will need to be changed as a result to close any possible legal loopholes.
"It's not costing us or the state anything," Brendan Pauwels from VicRoads assured Neil Mitchell.
The trial is being sponsored by a traffic management company.
Neil Mitchell questioned whether there was a conflict of interest, given the company sponsoring the trial would likely receive a financial benefit from the replacement of signs if the trial is deemed a success.
The Committee for Melbourne is behind the idea and defended it on 3AW Breakfast.
"It's the idea of our future focus group - which is a bunch of younger people who, I think, are pretty well attune to the temper of the times," Committee for Melbourne CEO Martine Letts explained.
