Mitchell, who was revealed as the Ballarat Sportswoman of the Year for a fourth time last week, also hasn’t closed the door on a possible tilt at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
“Athletics being an Olympic sport, we work in four-year cycles. I hadn’t planned much after Rio in terms of the next Olympics… I thought I’d be Olympic champion,” the 34-year-old told The Courier.
“After Rio, having such a good year and being in great shape, I also didn’t want to make a decision on it (retirement) then either. I just said it will be year by year now.
“I’ve committed definitely to the Commonwealth Games because I think that’s important for me to do.”
Mitchell said she will assess her position following the championships on the Gold Coast, which will potentially be her fourth appearance at a Commonwealth Games.
“If the body is okay... obviously I am getting on, I’ve got to think about family and things like that and that’s a real consideration for women in sport. And it’s a big one,” she said.
“Between the Commonwealth Games and Tokyo Olympics there’s two-and-a-half years, so maybe. I’m not closing the door on it.
“I’ll probably have a bit of a break after the Commonweath (Games) and see where I’m at. And if I feel that there’s still business left undone, then I’ll try and if it works out, it works out and if it doesn’t, it doesn’t.”
Mitchell finished sixth in the javelin final at the Rio Games, with her throw of 64.36m less than 2m behind gold medal winner Sara Kolak from Croatia.
