Pyke said it was not an easy decision to make, but by the same token it was a great problem to have.
While he admits he will be keeping a keen eye on the CHFL round one scores, the opportunity to play in a grand final was something he could not pass up.
“It’s a difficult scenario to be placed in, understanding both roles that I undertake with both clubs as a player and a coach,” Pyke said.
“It’s combined for a perfect storm...it’s a good problem to be trying to sort out, but it has not been an easy decision to make that’s for sure.
“I’d love to be a part of round one, but in the end grand finals are hard to come across and realistically you’ve got to make the most of that opportunity.”
Pyke said the decision had been made much easier given the understanding nature of the Bungaree Football Club.
While he will still have a strong focus on football during the week as he hones in on selection and tactics towards round one – Pyke is fully committed to playing his role in the team to help deliver Wendouree the premiership.
“Thankfully, Bungaree have been more than understanding of the situation and now with their blessing, I’ll play cricket both weekends.
“I’ve still got planning and selection, game plans and structure to do before round one against Dunnstown...definitely come both weekends – cricket is the focus.”
Wendouree captain Cole Roscholler felt last week’s hard-fought victory against Naps-Sebas provided a great lead-in to the grand final, with the side leaving the contest with plenty of belief.
“It took 11 even contributors on the weekend...that’s been a key to our success all year that we’ve had 11 key contributors throughout every game – so if we can continue to do that it’ll go a long way to helping us win the game.
“We can take confidence from believing we can win from any position.”
