The BMS boys scored a seven-shot grand final triumph over Learmonth to win the division one weekend pennant premiership.
That success – its first at division one level since the 2010-11 campaign – earns the club promotion to the Ballarat-Geelong premier bowls league for next season.
BMS president Cameron Bryce was out there in the heat of battle at Central Wendouree on Sunday and cast a happy figure after his team clinched the 94-87 victory.
Bryce said it is a massive result for the club and backs up the division two midweek pennant grand final win earlier in the week.
“Absolutely we are going to go to premier division,” Bryce declared.
“We went up there (to Alfredton) 10 years ago and we are trying to be the western pillar of bowls in Ballarat. And we can only do that if we are playing elite bowls Monday and Saturday.
“To give us a chance to do that, there was a lot of pressure on. We’ve retained players and hopefully we will attract a few. It’s huge for our club. It’s bloody awesome.”
Sunday’s result came after BMS – which finished on top following the Ballarat District Bowls Division home and away rounds – was beaten twice on grass by Learmonth this season, including in the semi-finals.
But the BMS outfit proved best when it mattered most.
“We were always pretty confident. The (rink) draw came out and we liked the draw,” Bryce said.
Bryce paid tribute to the Learmonth side, which was chasing its first division one title since 2000-2001.
“There was ebbs and flows today and it’s 2-2 for the season,” Bryce said.
“We are great competitors, we match up well. Today was our lucky day. They’re a great club and a great side, so hats off to them.”
Learmonth bowler David Kelly told The Courier BMS was the best team during the afternoon.
“We beat them a couple of weeks ago and we thought we’d have the edge on them today, but they out-bowled us,” Kelly said.
“For a small country club, we’ve had a really good season and we look forward to trying again next year.”
