Kaifur Rashed, who hit the teenage cyclist and left him seriously injured on the road, was spared jail on Wednesday but has been disqualified from driving for four years.

Melbourne Magistrates Court heard this week ??? Rashed??? initially thought he had hit a shopping trolley when he drove through a West Melbourne intersection in the early hours of November 18,
after a night out with friends.

Magistrate Charlie Rozencwajg??? said on Wednesday he did not accept Rashed's account, given the driver saw people gathering around the injured Ben Tyrrell, 18, who suffered a head injury when knocked from his bike.

Rashed, a card dealer at Crown casino, stopped his Jeep 84 metres from the point of collision and looked back, the court heard, but then drove home. He handed himself in to police later that day after an
appeal by the teenager's parents.

Mr Tyrrell, a tradesman, had been out with his boss in the hours before the collision and rode his bike through a red light. He was not wearing a helmet.

His parents, Kevin and Julie Tyrrell, this week said their son was out of hospital and making good progress in his recovery.

Mr and Mrs Tyrrell shook hands with Rashed outside court on Monday, after he pleaded guilty to failing to stop at the scene of an accident, failing to render assistance and failing to provide his details.

On Wednesday, Mr Rozencwajg said that while he doubted Rashed's account about believing he had hit a shopping trolley, he accepted the 26-year-old panicked after the incident and was remorseful.

Defence counsel Veronika??? Drago??? said Rashed realised the seriousness of his offending when he woke up following the incident. She said he told police he wanted to send flowers and a card to Mr Tyrrell, but was advised against doing so by police.

"He didn't expect to be forgiven because he has not yet forgiven himself," Ms Drago said.

The court heard there was nothing untoward about Rashed's driving and no evidence to suggest he had more than one drink in the hours before the incident. He did not see Mr Tyrrell before the collision, the court
heard.

Rashed, an aspiring mechanical engineer, was convicted and disqualified from driving for four years.

He must also complete 150 hours of unpaid work and attend a road trauma course as part of a 15-month community corrections order.
