The controversial Buangor to Ararat bypass is the subject of a Supreme Court battle between VicRoads and a group of land owners who believe an alternative northern route could be completed at a lesser cost with less environmental impact.
The project is currently stalled after an administrative blunder meant an expired permit was not renewed. VicRoads hopes to resolve the issue in coming weeks.
In another blow to VicRoads it is claimed at least two “significant trees” would have to be removed if the current route was pursued.
The National Trust of Victoria has written to VicRoads raising “serious concerns” with the proposed removal of a yellow gum located at 689 Hillside Road Ararat and a Red River Gum located on the Western Highway at Buangor. Aboriginal Victoria is currently investigating claims it is a culturally significant birthing tree.
“Aboriginal Victoria received and are assessing a report from a member of the public regarding a possible Aboriginal birthing tree at Buangor," a spokeswoman said.
NTAV said the trees should be preserved “for the education and appreciation of future generations”. Western Highway project acting project director Steve Pattinson said in a written statement that each tree would be examined individually.
“We will continue to work with our Environmental Consultation Group and the National Trust to ensure we address their concerns and that this essential project is able to proceed,” Mr Pattinson said.
“We're looking at each tree on a case by case basis and where we can we are avoiding the impact, building around certain trees or relocating them. However, in some cases, it's simply unavoidable.”
It is understood NTAV notified VicRoads that both trees have been placed on its register of significant trees. VicRoads had started fencing works and tree removals when work was stopped in February.
