Two years ago the 57-year-old was diagnosed with amyloidosis, an umbrella term for a group of rare but devastating disorders where protein deposits disrupt the body’s functioning.
Doctors told Alan he only had four to six weeks to live.
But, helped with the support and love of his wife Judy, he’s still with us.
Looking out at the sun setting over Lake Wendouree on Friday ahead of a fishing fundraiser on Saturday, Alan reflected on how life has changed for the pair. “You could sit in the corner and mope and cry,” he said.
“We’ve done that, but then realised that’s a waste of a life. Now we live life to the fullest. I was given four to six weeks, but eighteen months down the track I’m still here.”
Victorian Trout and Redfin Fishing will host an angling fundraiser at Lake Wendouree on Saturday from 6am until 3pm. A barbecue at Durham Point will kick off from noon until 3pm, with prizes for all ages.
