Mr Fischer’s 2014 book on the legendary soldier, Maestro John Monash, argues it was the prime minister of the day WM ‘Billy’ Hughes who denied Monash the chance to be a field-marshal, and the rank should be posthumously awarded to him.
“Australia and Canada did so much of the heavy lifting on the Western Front at the end of the First World War,” says Mr Fischer.
“The battle of Hamel was meticulously planned and a complete success. Monash had allotted 90 minutes for the completion of the battle. It was over in 93 minutes, and he was allegedly annoyed at the extra time taken.”
This will be Mr Fischer’s second visit to the Booktown, which takes place on May 6 and 7.
He’ll be joined by authors such as Kate Grenville, Jane Harper and Tony Birch.
“I salute Clunes as a town lifting themselves on their own efforts and by their own merits,” says Mr Fischer.
