Police investigators said the elderly man, 92, was travelling north along Cowie Street before his mobility scooter tipped as he crossed a gutter about 3pm, causing him to suddenly fall.
The man suffered severe head injuries and was rushed to hospital but sadly died on Thursday morning.
It comes after members of Ballarat’s mobility scooter group launched a campaign for scooter-friendly footpaths and charging points last year.
The Scooter Club, which was set up in 2007, aims to provide a social network for members who rely on mobility scooters to lead a fulfilling and independent lifestyle.
Scooter users must stick to footpaths if they are available.
If there are no footpaths, they are able to ride on roads but must stick to the left.
Scooter drivers must not exceed a speed of more than 10km/h and must adhere to pedestrian rules.
Anyone who witnessed the accident or has any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at crimestoppersvic.com.au.
