Team skipper Jarrod Morgan, Beaufort gun Jack Duke, Gordon’s Gunnell brothers Mark and Luke and fellow Eagles player Tye Murphy are the only members of the 2016 outfit that have been selected for back-to-back interleague campaigns.
Highlanders coach Clive Raak is excited by the speed and versatility of his side, which will take on the Southern league in the AFL Victoria Community Championships senior fixture at Lyndhurst.
Raak said the new-look outfit was partially by design and because of circumstances out of his control.
“There was six or seven players that left the league so we’ve had to obviously replace those ones,” Raak said.
“But not only that, we’ve gone for a side that we think (can be) a little bit faster than the last few years.
“We’ve sort of got to a point where we had just got a bit stagnant and players had probably challenged themselves enough at interleague level that probably the commitment and drive is not there much any more.
“That’s why we have injected a lot of youth and hopefully a lot more run into our side.”
Long-time representative Morgan is the oldest player in the CHFL team at 31, with nine of his teammates 23 years old or younger.
Raak told The Courier he believed the 2017 outfit looked a better one than he had at his disposal last year.
“It’s very exciting to coach these guys because there’s so much versatility within the side,” he said.
Saturday’s senior match is scheduled to start at 2.10pm.
