A campaign to save Kohinoor has quickly gathered force after Ballarat Council flagged its intention to consider the future of Errard St centre.
Residents and user groups hope to convince council that Kohinoor has a future and plan to attend tonights council meeting.
Neighbour Birgit Brick said it would be a shame to lose valuable community space within central Ballarat and the centre should be retained.
I have two young children under two and I really hope we could find in the plan to retain some of the open space or include a playground area, she said.
Ballarat Council community development director Neville Ivey said there were no current plans to sell the centre but confirmed a review of its future was underway.
Council is not even considering selling it because I have not put a report to them to suggest that they do or dont, Mr Ivey said.
He said, if retained, it would need hundreds of thousands of dollars of rectification work to fix problems with the roof, foundations, floors, toilets and wet areas.
This is a really opportune time for groups to connect with us and share with us what it could be. I would then take this, and reports from independent building assessors about costs, and only then would council make a decision but it needs to be an informed decision.
Alex Bayley from the Ballarat Permaculture Guild said several environmental groups were keen to create a sustainability hub at Kohinoor, running courses, workshops and demonstration gardens.
If council reckon it will cost $400,000 to $500,000 to repair that seems cheap to get a great community centre running, especially when theyre putting much higher amounts in to new community centres in growth areas, she said.
Mr Ivey called for groups and individuals interested in the centres future to call him on 5320 5882.
