She finished in an impressive time of two hours, 38 minutes and 10 seconds to narrowly beat one of the race favourites, Justine Barrow.
Gigante said she had not been expecting to claim victory in her first year of racing the event, and to have it happen on her mother’s birthday made it all the more sweet.
“It’s so cool, I wasn’t really expecting to win so it is a nice surprise,” Gigante said.
“It was pretty hard, it was really windy around the back and there was one steep hill so I was just really happy to stay with them and then I had enough energy to go fast on the final climb.”
Gigante said training for nationals in four weeks’ time had helped in her preparation for the event.
“I have been training every day so I was really confident, but not for the win so that was a nice surprise,” she said.
