The idea for the celebration, which finished on Saturday, came from Wombat Arts member Lou Callow.
Fellow member Sarah Peckham said the group's artists were experimenting with fluorescent paints at the town’s primary school before they bought a blacklight, which emits ultraviolet light to make certain materials glow in the dark.
"Not only did everything we painted light up, but also tennis balls, paper, polystyrene," she said. "We thought, this is really good - let's share this."
The end result was the inaugural Black Nite, Black Lite Midwinter Celebration.
More than 30 shops gave space, time and power to Ballan artists, who impressed by using florescence and lights to create high-viz art displays.
“The reception has been really amazing, there were well over 1000 people on the opening night,” Ms Peckham said.
