City of Ballarat has pulled out all stops to ensure the surface will be in top condition for the Western Bulldogs versus Port Adelaide clash by replacing damaged turf through the middle of the ground.
Large covers have also been used at the venue.
City of Ballarat infrastructure and environment director Terry Demeo said due to recent wet weather, it had been decided to replace some slightly worn sections of the Mars Stadium turf to ensure it would be in pristine condition for this weekend’s game.
“The ground has passed multiple reviews by the AFL over the past few weeks and, in fact, we’ve had excellent feedback from the AFL about the turf,” Demeo said.
Demeo said works this week would consist of putting the AFL logo and other line markings on the ground.
“...it is not anticipated any wet weather later this week will have any effect on presenting the ground in its best possible condition,” he said.
“We not only want to present the ground in excellent condition for the AFL game on Saturday, but also for the upcoming Ballarat Football League and Central Highlands league grand finals.”
Saturday’s clash between the Bulldogs and Power will be the first AFL fixture played for premiership points in Ballarat.
It shapes as a huge game for both clubs, which are looking to shape their finals campaigns.
Western Bulldogs slipped to ninth on the ladder with Friday’s loss to GWS, while Port Adelaide dropped to sixth despite winning against Collingwood.
Teams have just one more home and away fixture after this round.
Saturday’s game will begin at 1.45pm.
