Ballarat lived up to its old reputation with the mercury hitting a low of -3.1C just after 4.30 am.
It was easily the coldest temperature for August but several clear nights in July were just that bit colder with July 1 recording the coldest of the year so far with -4.0C.
Clear skies overnight meant the temperature dropped below zero after 11pm on Saturday night and was still below freezing point at 8.30am in Sunday.
This made for a solid frost underfoot for those out for an early run or walk and the possibility of black ice on some of the tricky shaded sections of the road.
However once the sun is up it is predicted to be a clear and largely windless day with the temperature climbing to a balmy 10C sometime after midday.
