A range of cultural activities and authentic Indian vegetarian cuisine are set for a celebration focused on Lord Ganesha.
The Hindu deity is found throughout India, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Nepal and associated with arts and science, intellect and wisdom.
The event will mark Lord Ganesha’s birthday and, after an opening prayer, the day’s line up will include singing as well as a range of dance performances from children and adults.
With kid’s activities and a raffle, the day will conclude with a dance which the whole audience can join in.
Ballarat Hindu Temple and Cultural Centre’s Dr Vani Peddi said anyone is welcome at the event which promotes sharing and caring among all sectors of Ballarat’s community.
“Our overall purpose is to embrace all members of the community,” she said.
BHTCC was formed as a voluntary, non for profit organisation was less than two years ago to cater to Ballarat’s Hindu community while extending the hand of friendship to all cultures.
With an aim to share Hindu culture and philosophies with the Ballarat community, the organisation is still looking for a permanent home, a cause for which Dr Peddi said this celebratory event will raise funds.
“It’s a fundraiser to build the cultural centre in the future, which we are hoping to have built in the next few years,” Dr Peddi said.
She said there were about 200-250 members of the organisation and a crowd of more than 200 people are expected to attend.
The organisation’s last event to celebrate the birth of Krishna in August attracted about 175 people to the Victorian Railways Institute Hall..
Ganesh Chaturthi will occur on September 17 at 375 Humffray Street North, Brown Hill, commencing at 11am until 4pm. Tickets for the day are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Those wanting to participate or to find out more can email ballarathindutemple@gmail.com.
