Anwar Teriaki was shot and killed about 12.35am on Wednesday, August 9, only metres from his family's home on Hayfield Road in Roxburgh Park.

Police have released the frightening footage in the hope someone witnessed the chase or the aftermath and can supply them with new information about what happened.

Fairfax Media understands that Mr Teriaki, 21, was an associate of the Tiba crime family, who have been linked to at least six non-fatal shootings in the north-western suburbs since last September.

Investigators believe the men lay in wait for up to 40 minutes inside a silver sedan until Mr Teriaki returned home.

He had just arrived at his home on Coronet Avenue when a silver-coloured sedan pulled up at his doorstep.

Several people carrying weapons confronted Mr Teriaki, who ran east along the avenue.

Two of the men raced after him on the footpath, while the silver sedan gave chase along the road.

Victoria Police detective senior sergeant Julian Horan said the footage showed "a man running for his life and a pursuit to his death".

"We are still trying to establish the motivation from this shooting. The family have no knowledge of anyone who would want to harm Anwar."

"We are still trying to piece together his movements prior to arriving home.

"There are some secretive aspects to his life we are trying to explore and he did have some involvement with police."

Police say it is possible he knew his attackers.

On the corner of Coronet Avenue and Atlas Street the footage shows Mr Teriaki tipping over a wheelie bin into the men's path.

That caused one of the men to fumble the weapon he was carrying, but it does not stop them for long.

They eventually caught up with him at the intersection with Hayfield Road.

It is believed Mr Teriaki took cover behind a brick fence at the front of a family home, before he was shot and killed.

"They came looking for this man, where is he, they were looking for him," one witness told Fairfax Media the day after the shooting.

"I saw them come this way and stop ... [then] they're shooting four times."

In the wake of his death, friends of Mr Teriaki paid tribute to him on social media, saying he had a "heart of gold" and would be missed.

Police describe both men who pursued Mr Teriaki as thinly built and about 170 centimetres tall. One man has dark hair shaved on the back and sides, while the other man was wearing a hooded jumper.

The silver sedan was later found burnt-out in Reservoir.

Police are asking anyone who recognises either men or the vehicle to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
