A motion before councils ordinary meeting on Wednesday night proposes to revisit the names for North, South and Central wards.
This includes investigating the use of traditional names of Wathaurung Aboriginal group.
It could also look at using names synonymous with Ballarat, such as Eureka.
A council report said it was an opportunity to recognise the Aboriginal language and pay homage to traditional owners.
“There is an opportunity to recognise Ballarat’s unique heritage and assign names that resonate with the local and wider community,” the report said.
“Names will be unique to Ballarat whereas the directional North, Central and South have no association.”
Once names have been approved by council, an application will be made to the state local government minister to request the change.
