The Cats confirmed on Thursday that they would not offer another contract to the former Daylesford footballer, who was drafted to the club in 2009 with pick 56.
“Josh’s great character and resilience held him in high regard with his teammates and coaches over his eight years at Geelong,” The Cats’ general manager of football Simon Lloyd told geelongcats.com.au.
“Josh has and will continue to be greatly respected by everyone at the club and we wish him all the best for his future endeavours.”
Cowan’s time at Geelong proved frustrating, with the talented former North Ballarat Rebels player plagued by Achilles and hamstring injuries for much of his time at the top level.
The Daylesford 2007 Central Highlands Football League premiership player started in three AFL games in his debut year of 2011 before injury saw him wait 1384 days until his next match.
During his 16-game career with Geelong, he played in 15 wins. His only defeat came in the 2016 preliminary final against Sydney at the MCG.
Cowan played the opening two games of 2017.
The 26-year-old is now able to pursue other options as a free agent.
Cowan joins club greats Andrew Mackie and Tom Lonergan on the list of departures from Geelong this year.
