The Whiskey Room is Mary Bureaux, Sue Klerks and Bernard Klerks, all proficient jazz, blues and classical musicians. The Whiskey Room repertoire consists of old-style blues and folk songs with a touch of jazz. Mary studied Jazz at NMIT, creative arts at VCA and has sung in jazz-blues-funk, reggae and indie bands. Bernard has studied jazz (bass and double bass) at VCA and has played in jazz, reggae, popular and blues bands. He has toured Germany and Ireland as a musician and currently plays in two other groups who regularly perform in Ballarat and Trentham. Sue’s training was in classical music but she has always enjoyed singing jazz and blues and has played and sang in a range of popular, a capella, jazz and blues groups.
Saturday, Kingstone Ska @The Spa Bar Daylesford
King Stone, a fine mix of hard-working professional musicians, specialise in ska. They have done so throughout Central Victoria for about six years.The up-beat 7 piece outfit is ‘always ready to lift you up with the throbbing, pulsating rhythms of ska’.
Sunday, Dag & Ciggie Witch @ Old Hepburn Hotel
Don’t miss your chance to catch two of the city’s finest at the local pub. Ciggie Witch, featuring members of much-loved touring outfit The Ocean Party, play ‘rock and roll songs with lyrics that will stick in your head for days’. Dag, originally from the sun-baked plains of Queensland, are more like Dylan gone electric – ‘folk songs with a hard edge, written for the problems of a modern world’. The bands will be joined by young local musicians The Natichkies.
Friday, Jo Jo Rainwater @ Blue Bean Cafe, Hepburn Springs
Jo is said to exude Southern charm and humour, endearing audiences and opening hearts to his culture and heritage by the banks of the Mississippi River. His parents were even sweethearts in the 1950s, in the same school as Elvis Presley. JoJo shares songs and stories about his Cherokee great-grandmother from the Ozark mountains and his other grandparents, dirt-poor sharecroppers.
