Police said a white Ford sedan smashed into the rear of the woman's red Mitsubishi sedan along Lower Duneed Road at Armstrong Creek, forcing her car off the road and into a tree yesterday about 2.10pm.
CFA crews rushed to the scene and used hydraulic rescue tools to free the woman from her vehicle before she was airlifted to a Melbourne hospital with critical injuries.
A young baby in her car, believed to be under two years old, was also hospitalised.
Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives travelled from Melbourne to the crash site, launching an investigation into the incident and remaining late into the afternoon.
The driver of the Ford, a 45-year-old man from the Geelong suburb of Whittington, was taken to hospital and was assisting police with their inquiries.
“Police are keen to speak to anyone that may have witnessed the collision or the movements of the white Ford sedan prior to the collision,” Victoria Police spokeswoman Leading Senior Constable Melissa Seach said.
Emergency service workers blocked traffic near Charlemont Road as the air ambulance helicopter landed on Lower Duneed Road in between trees.
