The Ashes have been played again since then - a 2015 win on home soil for England.

But that summer four years ago, the summer of the Mitchell Johnson-led fierce pace attack, of booing Stuart Broad, of ill-will and sledging, was the last time the Ashes were played in Australia. Coming off a series loss just months earlier in England, and settling in under coach Darren Lehmann, the victory was even sweeter for the home team.

So ahead of the Test series, which begins on November 23 in Brisbane, we're taking a look back at some of the best moments from that golden summer for Australia.

CLARKE AND ANDERSON EXCHANGE PLEASANTRIES

It didn't take long for hostility to boil over, as Michael Clarke and Jimmy Anderson showed in the first Test in Brisbane. Clarke was heard through the stump microphone on the field telling Anderson, who was batting at the time, that he should "get ready for a broken f----ing arm". Clarke was fined for the sledge, but it was a moment that united Australian fans behind their captain. Chloe Saltau wrote for Fairfax Media at the time that "the moment Michael Clarke bared his teeth as Australian captain might be the one that finally makes his country appreciate him", and Russell Jackson wrote in The Guardian "the old Australian Ugliness has returned and for now it's a welcome sight down under". Broad was already being booed just for stepping on the field, but the tension was just getting started.

MENACING MITCHELL JOHNSON

Speaking of hostility ... Mitchell Johnson had an unbelievable summer for the Australians, terrorising the England batsmen. Described at various stages as "nasty", Johnson ripped through the English line-up time and again. In the second Test in Adelaide, he took 5-12 in a half hour after lunch on day three. He ended up taking 7-40 in that innings and eight wickets for the match. After bowling at helmets in Brisbane, he proved he could also bowl at the stumps in the second Test. England simply had no answer for his brutal pace. He ended up taking 37 wickets for the series, the perfect response to English fans who had derided him for his previous efforts in Ashes Tests.

HADDIN TURNS A TEST

Things hadn't actually started that well for Australia. They got off to a less than inspiring start with the bat, and England had Australia on the ropes at a precarious 6-132. That's where Brad Haddin came in. With some help from Johnson, he took Australia to 7-246. Eventually run out for 94, the damage was already done. Australia went on to make 295 and a second-innings score of 7-401 (dec). England could only manage 136 and 179 in reply.

HARRIS' PERFECT BALL

The second Test, Perth. Ryan Harris takes the ball and with one delivery, removes England captain Alastair Cook, sending the WACA Ground crowd into raptures. "I don't think I've bowled too many better ones in my career," Harris wrote in a column for Fairfax Media afterwards. The picture says it all, really.

BAILEY'S SMASHING OVER

Before Harris could take that wicket in Perth, Australia had to give them something to chase. Shane Watson scored 103 before George Bailey decided to help things along. And did he ever. Bailey took 28 runs off one Jimmy Anderson over, eventually scoring 39 off 30 balls, helping Australia to 6-369 and setting England 504 to win.

STOKES SCORES A TON

There weren't many highlights for the English on this tour, with their batsmen largely failing to fire. But Ben Stokes managed to provide one, scoring England's only century for the series. Stokes made 120 in England's second innings in Perth before being caught behind off the bowling of Nathan Lyon.

With the win wrapped up in three Tests, Australia didn't take the foot off the pedal. They went on to enjoy a series whitewash with wins in Melbourne and Sydney. What were your favourite moments of the series?
