Shane Gannon appeared in the Supreme Court of Victoria on Thursday by video link after he was committed to trial from Ballarat Magistrates Court in May.
Judicial Registrar Mark Pedley remanded Gannon in custody to reappear before the court on November 24 following the release of a report on his mental condition.
A 72-year-old man man died of stab wounds at Langstaffe Drive, Wendouree in November 2016.
38 year old Gannon was later charged with one count of murder murder.
