Now in its 11th year, the annual event raises funds for Ballarat’s leading cancer research centre the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute.
Board members, sponsors and volunteers attended a breakfast at The Provincial on Friday to hear from Malthouse and FECRI research director Professor George Kannourakis.
Professor Kannourakis said the cycle classic event was an example of how support from individuals and local businesses could have an enormous impact.
“The institute receives no government funding and relies on community support,” he said. “Our every step towards beating cancer through research is made possible by the generous support of our community.”
Professor Kannourakis said more than $1.6 million had already been raised for the cancer research programs based in Ballarat.
The cycle classic offers 10 events to choose from covering a range of distances, terrains and levels of difficulty to cater for all abilities.
The 50km, 60km, 85km and 100km road rides take cyclists through the Mount Buninyong Climb from the Australian National Road Cycling Championships.
There are 28km, 33km, 40km and 50km off-road mountain bike challenges, while the lake ride is designed to attract the casual or social cyclist.
The 6km walk and run around Lake Wendouree is suited to friends, families and pets not interested in cycling but wishing to participate and support cancer research.
Meanwhile, the lakeside village precinct and cycle classic hub will come alive with live music, food and free activities.
The Ballarat Cycle Classic takes place on February 18 at Lake Wendouree. For more information or to register visit reach4research.com.au.
