A NEW supermarket could soon be built at Creswick.Ross Barnett Design has lodged an application with the Hepburn Shire Council for a 1695sqm shopping complex in Albert St.The subject land is parcelled over five titles covering 5100sqm and is directly opposite the town's sole existing supermarket, FoodWorks Creswick. The proposal is for 1100sqm of retail space plus 60 car parks and two loading bays.In a report to go before council this month, no mention is made of what retail outlets would occupy the development. However in January The Courier reported the site had been earmarked for a 1500sqm supermarket. At the time, Caine Real Estate principal Damian Caine said it was not known which supermarket group would occupy the new development.Mr Caine declined to comment any further yesterday. The project has recorded two objections in regards to traffic and safety. The CFA, which is situated next to the site, has expressed concerns over an interrupted line of vision for fire fighting vehicles. However the council report said this issue would be addressed through amendments to the application.Creswick Ward councillor Janine Booth said she supported the proposed development.``There is a shortage of retail space in Creswick and it's about getting the right mix of business in the main street,'' Ms Booth said.``There is no issue as far as the public is concerned.''Creswick and District Development Association president Mark Shalless said a second supermarket would be a ``bonus'' for the town.``Personally, I think it's likely to bring people to the area,'' Mr Shalless said.``It will deliver a new level of service to Creswick and it might bring some of the shoppers who are doing their shopping in Ballarat back to the area.''The planning application will go before council on Tuesday, July 18.
