A child taken into care will often have no possessions with them when they arrive at their new foster parents’ home.
To combat this, Child and Family Services Ballarat hast partnered with the city’s charities and aims to put together 50 backpacks with important emergency items.
Donations can be made at Ballarat four Wozzle’s Warehouse stores.
This includes pajamas, clothes, books, torches and toiletries.
For most of the children taken into emergency care, it is a temporary situation only, and they can spend as little as two days before moving onto other accommodation.
The backpacks go with them, which allows them to take pride in their new possessions, rather than having to borrow from foster families.
Foster carer Claire Cummings said the children opened the packs and had immediate access to items they needed.
“When kids come in from emergency situations, they don’t have time to take everything with them,” she said.
