But for Royal Australian Army Lance Corporal Darcy Demasson, it was a normal way to spend a few weeks.
The Ballarat soldier has been deployed to the Australian Defence Force base in Malaysia as part of the army reserve’s 2nd Division. This includes completing field exercises in the jungle.
The division also provides support to the regular army’s 1st Division.
Lance Cpl Demasson said he does the deployment for the mateship that comes with working in a team for months at a time.
“The most enjoyable part is when your team is humming along smoothly in the field or on an exercise, and you know all the hard work and practice was worth it,” he said.
“My family is very supportive, although this is the first time going away from my girlfriend, but luckily I have a great support network of mates back home that can help her out.”
