Under the umbrella of The Browning Project, the family and close friends raised $75,000 for Ballarat Regional Integrated Cancer Centre in a special dinner at The Mining Exchange this month.
The event was inspired by the popular Ballarat businessman’s diagnosis of a brain tumour late this year – but Gary’s focus was on helping others. Fellow hoteliers, Gary’s suppliers to The George Hotel and his staff volunteered time and supplies for the gala, which was well-supported by the Ballarat business community.
The family’s directive is for all money raised to go to whatever was needed most in BRICC’s Wellness Centre.
Gary’s daughter Julie-Anne Dudley knew her dad was wonderful, but said it was amazing to see the respect for him bringing Ballarat together on the night.
“There was certainly a lot of money in the room on the night, but no egos,” Ms Dudley said. “If we felt the buzz and love in the room, we can only imagine what he felt...We wish we didn’t have to do this, but are amazed at the response.”
Gary is still undergoing treatment but made a short appearance on the night.
Ballarat Health Services chief executive officer Dale Fraser said such a professional result, pieced together in such a short time, was a real testament to the family of “quiet achievers” in how much they meant to the city.
“I think what they’ve done is brave at such a tough time, but they probably think it’s love,” Mr Fraser said.
