BALLARAT’S representative side has finished as runner-up once again in the Provincial Shield.
This year’s competition was hosted by the Ballarat District Bowls Division and played at the Central Wendouree Bowling Club in ideal weather conditions.
The Ballarat team was confident after beating last year’s winners Wimmera and then the Bendigo side.
In the last clash against Geelong, state squad member Matthew Flapper, whose rink had not won either of its earlier matches on the day, shot out to a commanding lead over Ballarat’s rink skippered by Col Johnson.
Equally impressive was another of Geelong’s rinks skippered by John O’Donnell, which had a strong win that secured the title for the visiting side.
Ballarat’s rinks skippered by Scott Roberts and Ben McArthur won matches, while Aaron Wood’s rink went down by a solitary shot in the final contest of the encounter.
McArthur’s rink won all of its three games on the day and proved to be the most consistent rink for the Ballarat outfit.
THERE was a thrilling final in the BDBD mixed pairs event between Anne Draffin/Glen Sargent and Elizabeth Kierce/Paul Lovell.
The clash was played at Sebastopol Bowling Club and went into a playoff end to determine the outcome.
With two ends to play, Kierce and Lovell held a five-shot lead and looked destined for a good win, until Draffin and Sargent forced the game into a tie-breaker.
Ultimately, Kierce and Lovell were able to hold on to the single shot required in the tie-breaker end to secure the title.
The winning duo will now progress to the next stage of the state championships.
