The past two state titles have gone to Ballarat.
Loreto College is the reigning champion, while Ballarat Grammar School claimed the championship two years ago.
On each occasion the crown was won on the back of Ballarat Associated Schools Head of the Lake victories.
This gives Grammar the frontrunning, but there will visiting schools including Lauriston, Firbank, Toorake, Melbourne Girls' School and Shelford looking to upset the hometown boats.
It is a different story in the schoolboys’ coxed four, with Head of the Lake titleholder St Patrick’s College needing to turn around the fortunes of Ballarat.
Scotch College finished one-two on Lake Nagambie last year and Melbourne High School earned bragging rights when the championships were last on Lake Wendouree in 2016.
The schoolboys’ final is scheduled for 3.25pm and schoolgirls at 3.35pm.
The state championships began with time trials on Friday night, and continue on Saturday and Sunday.
With more than 2000 athletes taking part across 136 events over 2000m, racing starts each day at 8am.
