Firefighters and police responded to the fire at 16 Otway Street South in Ballarat East shortly after 3am on Saturday.
The house had been empty for some time prior to fire and was being renovated, according to a police spokesperson.
Houses either side of the destroyed property sustained minor damage.
No injuries were reported.
One witness who lived in a house across the road said he was woken by his mother around 3.30am.
He said she had been woken by a loud bang shortly after 3am and noticed a glow coming from across the street.
“We went outside and saw plumes of smoke coming from the house,” he said.
“It was a very traumatic night for a few people. A lot of families were woken up by sudden bang and fire in the street.”
Police continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
