GOLDEN Point Cricket Club is preparing to turn 100 years old.A weekend of festivities, including a centenary ball and a proposed Twenty20 exhibition match against Port Melbourne, are in the pipeline for the November anniversary. The Pointies are calling for details of all former players to ensure all are part of the special occasion.Point life member Max Smith has been busy piecing together player contacts, checking each off a list in the club-rooms as he goes.He is still trying to track down 350 people.Smith said the special anniversary had crept up on the club sooner than expected."How it started was when I was researching 150 years for the Ballarat Cricket Association and discovered Point was formed in 1910 - we always thought it was 1913 for some reason," Smith said.According to association minutes, held at the Gold Museum, Golden Point was established between meetings on October 3 and November 12 in 1910.Smith's research has uncovered 11 club firsts premierships, including three pre-dating the 1950s.The club has produced Ballarat cricket legends including dual EJ Cleary medallist Neil Lee, Victorian Sheffield Shield player Ron Furlong and Arthur Meiklejohn, who captained the firsts for about 20 years.Meiklejohn played 44 consecutive seasons and more than 400 games from 1933, without missing a match. The leg spinner took more than 1000 wickets, including a 10-wicket haul twice.Smith would like stories and photos from all Pointies for a booklet to mark the club's 100-year history.Golden Point's team of the century will be unveiled at the centenary ball on November 20.A selection panel will sort through 27 nominees. The exhibition match is pencilled in for November 21 against Port Melbourne, one of the first clubs on record to have faced Point at Eastern Oval. For more information call Max on 5341 8348.
