Ballarat train runs out of fuel

MORE than 130 Ballarat-bound passengers were left stranded at Bacchus Marsh on Sunday night after their train ran out of fuel.Angry passengers were forced to wait in the cold for almost an hour as V/Line arranged for buses to transport them to Ballarat. It is believed the 7.08pm, three-car V/locity train from Melbourne to Ballarat ran out of fuel as it was entering the Bacchus Marsh station. After a 40-minute wait for a bus, the passengers finally arrived in Ballarat at 9.50, almost 90 minutes late.Angry parents waiting for their children at the Ballarat Railway Station on Sunday night have complained to V/Line about the incident. One parent, Mary Chappell, was at the Ballarat Railway Station waiting for her son to return from work in Melbourne when station staff told her the train had run out of fuel.''My son and the other passengers were forced to wait at the Bacchus Marsh station for 40 minutes. The station building was closed and there were no toilet facilities. The passengers weren't offered refreshments or even a refund. They were just told to wait for a bus,'' Mrs Chappell said. The Ballarat mother was one of many parents to formally complain to V/Line.Opposition public transport spokesman Terry Mulder has called on the state government to explain why someone forgot to refuel the railcar for a 119km trip.''Running out of fuel is inexcusable, as is V/Line's failure to tell anxious parents waiting for their children who have to go to school the next day,'' Mr Mulder said.''Running out of fuel is symbolic of the government of the day.''
