Weatherboard man dies in car crash at Cardigan

A 20-YEAR-old Weatherboard man was killed yesterday morning after his car hit a tree at Cardigan.Police said the white Holden Commodore sedan was travelling west on Remembrance Drive when the man was believed to have lost control of the vehicle shortly after 7am.The car hit a tree on the driver's side, about 100 metres west of Launchley Drive.Passing motorists alerted police to the accident shortly after.Ballarat Police Leading Senior Constable Dave Morton said the man's family had been notified but was unable to release his name."At this stage we don't know the cause of the crash,"he said.At the scene yesterday morning, debris was strewn from the car.Country Fire Authority Cardigan brigade captain Jim Hare was among the first on scene about 7.30am.He said the Cardigan tanker, Sebastopol LPG unit, Ballarat rescue unit and Ballarat CFA car all attended.The scene was blocked for several hours yesterday morning to cars in both directions.It is unknown if speed, alcohol or foggy weather conditions contributed to the crash.Leading Senior Constable Morton said police were investigating and a Coroner's report would be prepared.The fatal brings the state's road toll for July to 21.It is the second fatality on the region's roads in less than a week.Last Tuesday night, a young woman died in a three-car collision on the Western Freeway near Myrniong.The Greendale woman was driving a Mitsubishi sedan when it struck the rear of a black Holden utility.
