WITH 38 registered Clean Up Australia Day sites in Ballarat over the past week, many locals took part in the event for the first time this year.Yesterday, large skip bins across the city were filled with rubbish as volunteers returned full sacks to 18 registered sites.Clean Up Australia Fussell Street Valley co-ordinator Diane Chester has been involved in the clean-up for eight years.“I’ve been really pleased with the turnout today,” Ms Chester said.In total, 23 participants signed up, many online, to help at the site.Ms Chester’s daughters Lauren,??9, and Amy 6, helped out by donning gloves and carrying rubbish bags. “We often walk around the block with a bag and pick up rubbish. It helps to make them proud of where they live and how to look after it,” she said.Clean Up Australia Ballarat co-ordinator Mike Caldwell said the work started last Wednesday with BEST business group and will finish tomorrow with Ballarat Grammar year 9 students cleaning up Creswick Forest.
