Cooke gets national netball selection

SHARP shooter Daniel Cooke will make his return to the Australian men's netball team.The 24-year-old Cooke was named in the national squad this week after impressing at the Australian Men's and Mixed Netball Championships in Penrith.Cooke will play an international series against New Zealand, and possibly South Africa and India, on the Gold Coast in October.The Ballarat Pride division one coach was on debut for the Victorian Cyclones open men's team and returning to the game after more than a year's recovery from a knee reconstruction.In a dream return to the court, Cooke averaged almost 80 per cent accuracy in the week-long tournament while the Cyclones obliterated most rivals to capture the title undefeated.The Cyclones defeated Queensland in the final, 65-32.Cooke will return to Victorian Netball League action in Melbourne tonight to coach his UB Ballarat Pride team against Southern Saints.Pride head coach Jo Dash said the club was proud of Cooke's efforts and hard work."It's a real plus for a young guy who is absolutely passionate about netball,'' Dash said."He loves playing, is a good umpire and good coach," Dash said."Playing in the Victorian men's team is a big step for him."To get a lot of court time and play really well is fantastic for him."Our girls are thrilled for him."One of ours has made it to the top and has done really well."He inspires the girls and we're so thrilled."Cooke made his national debut with South Australia aged 15.He played open level for the state three times before moving to Victoria, where he captained the Cyclones' under-23s.He has toured with Australia at open and under-23 level.Cooke told The Courier leading into the national competition that his aim was to enjoy playing again, rather than think about national selection.Dash said Cooke was ecstatic when the Australian team was unveiled.Cooke, now based in Brunswick, is in his second season on the Pride coaching panel, having transferred from VNL rival Western Lightning.
