Ballarat CBD strategy: more than $1.5 million to roll out

MORE than $1.5 million will be used to roll out Ballarat City Council’s CBD Strategy in the draft 2011-12 budget.The strategy – to be considered by council next month – sets out a 25-year action plan for growth in central Ballarat.In the next financial year, a major proposed initiative will be a $500,000 Bakery Hill entrance redesign, complemented by a $100,000 redevelopment of the Coles/Safeway shopping centre and carpark in Eastwood Street.Sovereign Hill chief executive officer Jeremy Johnson urged council in February to improve the city’s entrances, particularly the Victoria Street/Bakery Hill/Bridge Mall precinct.Street furniture will be replaced at a cost of $150,000 while CBD toilets will also be provided, also costing $150,000.Public art and beautification works will be $300,000, and it will cost $50,000 to incorporate the CBD strategy into the council’s planning scheme.A further $200,000 is allocated for the upcoming CBD parking strategy which will be considered by council next month.The funding will be used for a revised parking system, and new and updated parking and way-finding signs.CBD Strategy works over the past two years have included Sturt Street footpath works, public safety initiatives, Sturt Street feature lighting, centre median works and the installation of digital projectors for the Ballarat Town Hall.
