Miners Rest crash: man critically hurt

A ST ARNAUD man was airlifted to hospital after a head-on car smash at Miners Rest on Saturday night.Police said two vehicles were travelling in opposite directions on the Sunraysia Highway when they collided about 7.30pm.A 42-year-old Learmonth man was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to the Ballarat Health Services Base Hospital with chest injuries.Police said the St Arnaud man, 54, had to be rescued from his car’s wreckage and was flown to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition.Ballarat Highway Patrol Senior Constable Tony Creanor said police blocked the highway for three hours as emergency services crews cleared the scene.Approximately 50 emergency services workers from the CFA, police and ambulance attended the crash which littered debris across both lanes.The highway was re-opened to traffic just before 11pm.Ambulance Victoria spokesperson John Mullen said the man airlifted suffered a broken leg and chest injuries, while the other man’s injuries were minor.Both vehicles suffered extensive front-end damage from the impact, with one tipped over onto its side.Meanwhile, four people were injured in a crash near the corner of Sturt and Gillies streets yesterday morning.The accident, involving two vehicles, happened about 9.30am.Two people were treated at Ballarat Health Services Base Hospital for minor injuries, while another two were transferred to St John of God Hospital with minor injuries.Police said CFA rescue crews had to free an elderly Ballarat couple, aged 86 and 90, from one of the vehicles.A 48-year-old man was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital early yesterday morning after a single vehicle accident near Pootilla.The accident happened on the Ballarat-Daylesford Road about 2.25am when a car crashed through a fence and hit a small tree.The injured man was trapped in the vehicle for about an hour as emergency crews worked to free him.He was then airlifted to Melbourne suffering shoulder and leg injuries.And a 31-year-old man is in a stable condition in the Base Hospital after a single vehicle rollover on the Ballarat-Carngham Road at Bunkers Hill about 4.40 am yesterday.The man received facial abrasions, soft tissue bruising and neck injuries in the incident.Anyone with information about the Sunraysia Highway crash and the accident near Sturt and Gillies streets can call Ballarat Highway Patrol on 5336 1306.
