A MAN accused of torching three vehicles in Wendouree early yesterday morning, including a truck worth $22,000, has been remanded in custody.Jacob Charles Aspland, 20, appeared in Ballarat Magistrates Court yesterday afternoon but made no application for bail.He is facing seven charges, including three counts of arson and single counts of theft of a motor vehicle and driving while disqualified.Police prosecutor Sergeant Bob Anderson claimed Aspland broke into at least five different vehicles soon after midnight, gaining entry to most using a pair of orange-handled scissors. The alleged spree began when Aspland — who was said to be with three others travelling around Wendouree at the time — told the driver to pull over.Sergeant Anderson said police suspected that Aspland used the scissors to gain entry into a 1990 Nissan Navara utility before attempting to start it by putting the scissors in the ignition. When that proved fruitless, Aspland was said to have used a cigarette lighter to set fire to foam underneath the driver’s seat, ultimately destroying the vehicle. The ute was worth about $5000.Sergeant Anderson then accused Aspland of breaking into and torching a 1981 Mitsubishi van worth $500, and a 1993 Isuzu truck worth $22,000, after failing to start both vehicles. He claimed Aspland also broke into a 1989 Ford Laser in the same area, but fled when disturbed by the owner.Aspland then allegedly entered an unlocked 1998 Nissan utility, which he started using a key he already had, and drove around the Wendouree area. When pursued by police, the L-plater was said to have driven through ovals at Yuille Primary School before going into nearby paddocks and travelling along another track. He eventually ditched the vehicle and fled on foot.Police arrested him at home about 7.30am yesterday.Sergeant Anderson said that none of the three vehicles – all destroyed by fires – were insured.Aspland also stands accused of causing criminal damage to a vehicle, when on August 15 he is suspected of running out in front of a car in Wendouree. The driver was forced to stop, before Aspland allegedly got on top of the roof and started jumping up and down.Defence lawyer Scott Belcher made no application for bail but admitted the alleged offending could breach his client’s parole.Magistrate Michelle Hodgson remanded Aspland to the same court on December 7.
