new challenge: North Ballarat Roosters triple premiership captain Shaune Moloney is hoping to add more silverware to his collection as Ballarat Football League interleague coach.

NORTH Ballarat Roosters triple premiership captain Shaune Moloney says the groundwork starts now in his new football pursuit.Moloney was yesterday unveiled as Ballarat Football League interleague coach. He will lead the BFL into battle against the neighbouring Geelong Football League on May 27 in a bid to earn a spot back in the Victorian Country Football League division one title match in 2013.Moloney, a former Lake Wendouree footballer, looked forward to getting back to the grassroots game.“This is where I certainly started my footy in Ballarat and I’m really passionate about Ballarat football,” Moloney said.“I’m familiar with a number of players, I’ve played with a lot of them, I am particularly looking forward to getting to some local games, getting to know some local coaches and players. Also getting to know the eastern clubs as well.”Moloney succeeds fellow North Ballarat defender Kieran Murrihy, who coached the BFL for two seasons. The BFL faced Goulburn Valley for the VCFL division one title in May and Goulburn will defend the title against Mornington Peninsula next year.Moloney is co-coach of Ballarat Clarendon College firsts senior football team with Brad Macgowan, who is also a Roosters assistant coach. The former Roosters’ skipper has returned to Eureka Stadium this pre-season in a development and mentoring role at the club.Roosters’ development manager Marg Richards said Moloney had returned in a non match-day role, designed to be flexible about his busy schedule, and the club fully supported his new BFL position.“It’s a great result for football in Ballarat and for Shaune in his coaching,” Richards said.Moloney said the North Ballarat was his home and he wanted to help the club and players out anyway he could. He joined the Roosters in 1996 and played 202 Victorian Football League matches until retiring in the wake of the 2010 premiership.Moloney captained the team from 2006-2010 and was awarded VFL life membership last year.BFL chief executive officer Rod Ward said the league was thrilled to have Moloney at the helm.“His reputation in football in the region is second to none and we are extremely excited to have someone as highly regarded as Shaune take on this role and hopefully lead us to another shot at the Division 1 title in 2013,” Ward said. The BFL will host the GFL at Eastern Oval on May 27.
