According to police, the b-double prime mover was travelling towards Melbourne when it caught fire at Brewster, 20-kilometres east of Trawalla, just after 8pm.
A dozen Country Fire Authority brigades were assisted by three Fire Rescue Victoria vehicles to bring the blaze under control.
A CFA spokesperson said the truck was well alight and contained general good and small quantities of chemicals.
Due to smoke in the area, CFA issued an Air Quality warning just after 9pm.
An FRV Hazmat unit at the scene conducted atmospheric monitoring.
Nobody was injured in the fire.
The incident was declared to be under control at 11pm.
The freeway was closed Melbourne-bound for several hours, re-opening once the trucks were cleared and the scene was declared safe about 3.30am.
Police said the fire appeared to be non-suspicious.
