St Patrick's College principal Peter Casey said Mr Byrne was "a parochial and avid supporter of the school".
Mr Byrne attended the school from 1939 to 1947 and was inducted as a Legend of the College in 2003.
"St Patrick's College is enormously proud to have been closely involved with several generations of the Byrne family, stretching back to when Murray was a student here," Dr Casey said.
"Murray, through his enormous work as a member of parliament and solicitor in Ballarat, will long be honoured as one of the key developers in making the Ballarat community as strong as it is today."
Mr Byrne's many community achievements over five decades included being a founding member of Wendouree Youth Club, founder of the Ballarat Caledonian Housing Societies, and council member of the Ballarat Agricultural and Pastoral Society.
