Hickory is a tight little city of trim bungalows, old elms, plentiful churches and dawdling pick-up trucks in the wooded foothills of North Carolina's west where the Appalachians begin their ascent. Once slave territory and later the core of American furniture making, Hickory has, like much of America's south, bled jobs; unemployment hit 15 per cent a year ago, and glum trailer parks spread into pasture on the city's edges.
