Hopes of top four finish for Midlands take a hit from Webbcona

MIDLANDS’ top four hopes have taken a hit in Ballarat District Bowls Division midweek pennant division one with a 12-shot loss to Webbcona yesterday.

Webbcona climbed off the bottom of the ladder with a 74-62 away victory, claiming two rink wins and 14 premiership points.

Jenny Shepherd’s team outgunned Marie Phelan’s four, taking its rink 36-17.

Jackie Hammond’s four had a much tighter battle with Jan Vincent’s to take the points 22-21.

Allison Slee’s team scored two points for the home side, defeating Ann Gull’s four 24-16.

“It was worth all the hassle today with the wind,” Hammond said.

“We were well up before lunch and then we slipped back a bit. We had one rink well up but with our rink they came back at us.

“We dropped a four a couple of ends before the end. In the last end we were two up and two down on the head. I thought we might have a draw here. I managed to draw one in to be one down for the end.

“The rink that went down had two men and I think that makes a difference.”

It was Webbcona’s second overall victory for the season.

In the Central Wendouree derby the Central Wendouree A team had a comfortable victory over Central Wendouree B.

Heather Hopkinson and co won 32-21 against Val Page’s team, while Kay Geddes’ four won 27-21 against Carleen Bowers and Jill Kenyon’s team won 37-15 against Heather Snibson’s. Daylesford strengthened its hold on a top four place with a 97-48 demolition of Mt Xavier. Skippers Jo Best (29-20), Lois Voterakis (44-12) and Dot Bull (24-16) all won comfortably.

Smeaton found the going the tougher than expected against a very competitive Victoria side. Helen Mizzeni’s four (26-17) and Elizabeth Cosgrave’s (25-21) got the points, while Brenda Hughes scored for the Vics 27-18.

Meanwhile Avenue triumphed away against Creswick 72-58 to hold on to second place. Marie Russell’s team won 23-20 against Jean Rhook and Doreen Connell’s four won 25-14 against Beth Huntley. Dot Cook’s team and June Whitehead’s played out a 24-24 draw.
