BRUCE Stafford dreamt of a world class cancer research centre for Ballarat.
The Jens Gaunt Real Estate partner was farewelled in a moving memorial service at the Lydiard St Uniting Church yesterday, after his 25-year battle with cancer ended last week.
Mr Stafford was remembered for his dedication and unfailing love for his wife of 29 years Julie, their son Tim and daughter Cassie.
Tears and tributes flowed for the passionate Collingwood Football Club supporter, who beat Hodgkin's Disease before being diagnosed with asbestos cancer in 2003.
Mr Stafford Jnr said his father wanted his fight with cancer to leave a living legacy.
"There is currently no cure for this cancer," he said.
"His words to mum were: `Don't make this experience a waste. Make it count for something big'."
Mr Stafford Jnr said the family had secured commitments of more than $400,000 but he said it was "just a small drop in the ocean" in the bid to beat cancer.
The family invited the 600 people who packed the church to donate funds to the Ballarat Cancer Research Centre.
Ms Stafford, a talented singer, sang Time to Say Goodbye before blowing a kiss up into the air.
Mr Stafford's twin brother Bill read a letter Mr Stafford penned before his death.
"I have lived a wonderful life. There are no regrets," he read. "I have got this feeling that Collingwood are going to win a premiership ... things are going to change now that I am in charge.
"Goodbye to you all ... I love yas all."
Friend Pete Lloyd told how Mr Stafford coached Hexham to its first premiership win in 99 years and how he won the Best and Fairest award for Mortlake.
Jens Gaunt owner Neil Jens spoke of Mr Stafford's work success. Ballarat Senator Michael Ronaldson told of his inspirational spirit.
