Sebastopol Vikings player Anton Maggi said, although the charity shield match would be played in good spirit, it was also a great opportunity for the Vikings to test themselves against a side in FFV state league two.
“It gives us a gauge of how we’re going. Moving to state league is in the pipeline and it’s where we want to head,” Maggi said.
Devils player David King said the Vikings would be great competition.
“We’re a fairly young club, with most of the team originally from a BDSA club so everyone is looking forward to playing,” King said.
In previous charity field games in 2005 and 2007, the Red Devils played the champion BDSA side.
BDSA secretary Peter Reid said he hoped the match tonight would resurrect the charity match shield as an annual event.
“The BDSA is part of the Ballarat community, and the community supports us – so it’s good for us to give back to the community,” Reid said. Proceeds from the day will go towards the Ballarat and Integrated Regional Cancer Centre.
